A great team of engineers and scientists creates innovative ITS solutions in order to improve the traffic quality indicators, use of the road infrastructure and improve traffic safety.
Traffic management systems owe their efficiency mainly due to the data that are delivered by specialized sensors to the mathematical models (which are part of the software working in TMC) and road infrastructure elements, which together effectively act on traffic participants.
The innovative method of processing and integration a large amount of data from different sensors developed by the R&D improves the efficiency of managing traffic in road network and gives valuable knowledge to all traffic participants.
Agnieszka Socha Wins the Best Diploma Thesis in Electrical Engineering Competition!
On December 19, 2023, at the Electrical Engineering Department of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, the competition session for the “55th competition for the best diploma thesis in electrical engineering” took place. The competition was organized by the Gliwice Branch of the Polish Electrical Engineers Association (SEP) and SEP Branch No. 10 at the Silesian University of Technology, in cooperation with the Association of Electrical Engineers Alumni of the Silesian University of Technology and the Silesian Regional Chamber of Construction.
The competition allowed for engineering and master’s theses defended in the academic year 2022/2023. One of the five works submitted for the competition was the master’s thesis of Agnieszka Socha, representing the Department of Metrology, Electronics, and Automation of the Electrical Engineering Faculty, as well as a member

Abstract: Weigh-in-motion stations are used on roads for automatic recording of data on vehicles axle loads. In order to achieve direct legal enforcement, WIM stations should feature an internal real-time method for identification of unreliable measurements. In this paper, two groups of factors were used to assess the degree of measurement reliability. The first group included factors relating to ambient conditions; the second group included factors describing the trajectory and the dynamics of the crossing event (passage). The influence of the factors on the accuracy of the measurements was determined on the basis of an experimental study. The method is based on an appropriately-equipped WIM station and uses an algorithm with fuzzy logic. The results of the study indicate that almost 80% of the measurements are to be considered reliable, of which 40% of the measurements recorded at the WIM station were characterised by very high reliability. |

Abstract: This paper presents new functionalities for systems weighing vehicles in motion, which result from the integration of various measurement technologies and the use of a precise registration and data processing system. The utilized registration track provides accurate measurements of basic vehicle parameters such as axle load and vehicle speed and makes it possible to determine the location of the vehicle passing the weighing station, calculate the width of the tire tread, and detect twin (double) wheels. A key functionality is the assessment of the reliability of the measurement, taking into account, among other factors, vehicle movement dynamics and the ambient conditions during the measurements. For this purpose, additional measurements of road surface temperature and wind speed and direction were introduced. The technological solutions used and the proprietary data processing algorithms are described. Tests carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and to assess the significance of the influence of the isolated factors permitted confirmation of the validity of the proposed solutions. |

Abstract: In the paper the efficiency of the information transfer in the road traffic by the variable message signs was evaluated. The article consists of two parts. The first part discusses the purpose and types of signs, taking into account the technology of their manufacture. The main focus of this paper is on characters with discontinuous drawing. In the second part, based on the literature review and the author’s questionnaire, the requirements and expectations of drivers in terms of the form and manner of the information transfer were characterized. Abstract: This paper presents the analyses of the signals recorded by the main sensors of a WIM test station in the cases of abnormal runs (i.e., runs with the changes of trajectory or the dynamics of vehicle motion). The research involved strain gauges which are used for measuring the weight of vehicles, inductive loops, as well as piezoelectric sensors used, inter alia, to detect twin wheels and to determine where a vehicle passes through a station. Since the designers intend the station to be able to implement the direct enforcement function, the selection of runs deviating from the normative ones constitutes an important issue for the assessment of the measurement reliability. The study considered the location of the trajectory of the runs, the dynamics (acceleration/braking) and the trajectory changes. The change in the amplitude and the value of the signal recorded by the strain gauges as a function of the location (position) of the contact between sensor and tires is a noteworthy observation which indicates the need to monitor this parameter in automatic WIM systems. Other tests also demonstrated the influence of the analysed driving parameters on the recorded results. However, by equipping the WIM station with a set of duplicate strain gauges, the measurement errors of the gross weight and axle loads are normally within the accuracy limits of class A(5) stations. Only in the case of accelerating/decelerating, does the error in measuring the load of a single axle reach several per cent. |

Abstract: Wireless sensors providing data about air quality in the immediate vicinity of the road is a new technology with significant application potential in the field of intelligent transport systems (ITS). Bearing in mind that one of the purposes of the ITS application is the realization of the concept of an intelligent city, the prevention of air pollution becomes an interesting, future-oriented field of their implementation. The combination of information collected by a network of sensors, which are monitoring air quality with a pollution prediction models, allows to define new scenarios for traffic management and control strategies, whose principal aim is to prevent episodes of communication emission. This functionality requires an appropriate location of measuring stations. The aim of this article is to present the criteria used for location of station equipped with sensors monitoring the impact of transport on the air quality. In article, authors presented results of applied multi-criteria assessment in order to rank the location of measuring stations for the area, where the monitoring systems of the impact of transport on air quality (the city of Bielsko-Biala) are currently being built. Abstract: Proper characteristics of the traffic flow is a particularly important issue in the process of optimizing the efficiency of transport networks as well as in the traffic control systems. One of the elementary parameters of traffic flows is the structure of vehicles, which evaluation, in case of the automatic systems, requires the implementation of proper algorithms and methods for vehicle classification. In the paper is presented a method of vehicles classification using the discriminant analysis. Furthermore authors developed a classifier, which aggregate data according to classification 8+1 in accordance with the TLS specifications and according with the classification presented in the specification COST 323. Abstract: The paper presents selected analysis of traffic safety of the intersection equipped with a red light enforcement system. Violations recorded by the system are a substantial breach of the traffic participants’ safety and its effects, in the form of an incident or accident, have unacceptable social and economic dimension. Authors presented the scale of existing traffic violations and described relations between event occurrence and factors such as daytime, traffic speed and the time between the beginning of red signal and moment of passing the stop line. In addition, the paper proposes a measure to evaluate the traffic risk level as a function of time of passing the stop line and the speed of vehicle enters the intersection. This measure was mainly related to the indicator of traffic safety level of conflicting movements at signalized intersection (intergreen time) and the maximum allowed speed at the intersection entry. |

Abstract: The article outlines the architecture of a traffic monitoring system. A key attribute is the protection of sensitive data by dispersing the spectrum of information in such a way that (potential) unauthorized access to the data does not amount to the disclosure of personalized information. An essential feature of the system is the relatively small amount of planned costs for its installation. The monitored traffic is interpreted on the basis of incomplete and fuzzy information. The traffic study is carried out in a non-intrusive manner, and the way of identifying passing vehicles does not violate the privacy of traffic users, while the correctness of their movement is not the purpose of monitoring. The basis for inference is incomplete information, and the percentage of identified components of the anthropotechnical system remaining in motion is a multidimensional random variable. The article presents specific examples from a trial installation, and an essential attribute is the original statistical analysis. |

Abstract: The paper briefly characterizes the essential attributes of VMS variable message signs, demonstrating the cause-and-effect relationship between the sign’s functional features and its real purpose of conveying information about unpredictable traffic artifacts. In the following part of the study, a drawing with a description is included, showing the architecture of the VMS sign. The basic optical characteristics, determining the efficiency of information transmission, are indicated. Based on the basics presented, a diagnostic algorithm was developed, which is the content of a separate section of the article. The diagnostic algorithm indicates the need to perform the measurement cycle for each object at least three times. The results included in the material are from the measurement of two real objects, operated in the normal way. The benchmark is the data from the reference object included in the following section. The results were evaluated, and the result is the basis for the conclusions formulated. |

Abstract: Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) carry out the tasks of, in particular, increasing traffic safety and increasing the efficiency of the use of transportation systems. They are an element that is expected to be highly reliable and durable. In addition to design issues, the choice of the method of integration of elements and devices that make up ITS systems remains to be resolved. Integration through translations of constantly evolving communication protocols can cause an increase in unreliability of data exchange between the traffic management center (CZR) and roadside devices. Dynamic development, changes in technologies used in the realization of ITS systems especially with regard to roadside devices may in the long run reveal the lack of backward compatibility, causing the need to upgrade operable devices. The paper puts forward proposals to integrate roadside devices with the CZR using an integration database: an alternative that has significant practical advantages over translation of communication protocols. |

Abstract: The article presents the broader, social aspect of road traffic safety (BRD). Attention was paid to the unduly (in the authors’ opinion) exposed problem of the negative consequences of traffic incidents in the form of economic losses. The article distinguishes classes of losses, in particular those incurred both by direct perpetrators and participants in traffic, as well as by society in general. Attention was paid to the values of indicators of the cost of traffic incidents, related to GDP, as well as the most spectacular budget expenditures. Abstract: The article presents some problems related to the issue of the latest system of general traffic control using variable message signs. In the context of existing legislation, the authors discuss the issue usually described by the acronym Z-Z-Z: “Notice-Understand-Apply.” Using a simplified drawing, the authors present the issue of how to effectively direct a beam of light (in the sense of full angle) to effectively present information, depending on the geometry of the road. The obvious primary topic for discussion is the reliability of the electronic system, which affects both the behavior of drivers and the requirement to comply with recommendations, commands or prohibitions derived from the indications. |

Abstract: This article presents the innovative 3G technology used in the VMS (variable message signs). The 3G optics is an advanced lenticular solution that allows an effective mixing of three colours (RBG) without the effect of the colour change depending on the viewing angle. This technology is in opposition to the previously used systems with the separated light beam distribution for the red, green and blue colour. The work describes in detail the functional and technical performance of the new VMS technology and summarizes the characteristics of the parameters obtained from the previously used light beam distribution technology. An important element of the study is to present a measures of performance and efficiency associated with the power consumption, light output, light distribution, visibility, legibility, reliability and durability. Particular attention was paid to the evaluation of the VMS optical performance efficiency. In addition, in the presented work were shown examples of the installed 3G VMS, as well as examples of graphic and text messages displayed on 3G signs. |

Abstract: The topic of the variable message signs presented in this article was analysed in the aspect of proper choice of the light beam distribution angle. It was proven that the proper control of the beam is justified, depending on the road type and it’s course, since the proper distribution angle lead to a compromise of effectiveness and reliability. The effectiveness is a result of the S-U-U criterion (see – understand – use), and the important for the object lifespan growth in the reliability is a result of lowering the power. The natural context of the discussion, especially in regard to the conscious moulding the traffic security level, are the main national and union standards. |

Abstract: Heavy goods vehicles moving on public roads are driven by people belonging to all walks of society, including those, who for the price paid by others are ready to multiply their own profits. This problem is discussed in the article, in particular in terms of overloading car’s. There is pointed out on the technical implications of such actions. Later in the paper are presented the basic assumptions of lorries pre-selection weighting, which could be treated as a potential reason to the implementation of time-consuming exact weighting procedure. The discussion of hardware-software solution of pre-selection weighing systems was related to practical applications in national conditions. The article highlighted the problem of dynamic effects, significantly influencing the process of weighting in motion. |
